Amazon is expanding how it applies AI to the shopping experience: on Tuesday the company launched a new feature in its Alexa for Shopping assistant called "Update Me When." The feature sends personalized notifications when something new or relevant happens that could prompt a purchase.
Examples of what users can track
Amazon suggests several use cases for the "Update Me When" alerts, including when:
- a favorite brand releases a new product line,
- a new season of a favorite TV show becomes available,
- an artist announces a concert tour,
- an author releases a new book,
- or a technology company introduces a new product.
The intent is to move Alexa from answering direct product questions to anticipating moments that might lead a user to buy.
Current setup and possible future automation
At launch, consumers must configure these alerts themselves inside Alexa for Shopping. The company notes that a likely future direction is for Amazon to automatically generate alerts or suggest subscriptions to alerts while users browse products.
Related Alexa for Shopping capabilities
Amazon emphasized several other AI-powered shopping features alongside the new alert. Notably, an existing price-tracking tool lets users ask Alexa to notify them when an item hits a target price or a specified discount percentage; if the user prefers, the feature can automatically purchase the item once those conditions are met.
Other Alexa-for-Shopping capabilities in use include sourcing personalized deals, creating shopping guides, building carts from past purchases, tracking a product’s price history, providing AI overviews during searches or on product detail pages, transcribing handwritten lists into cart items, and comparing products.
Why this matters
The introduction of "Update Me When" and the broader set of AI shopping features signals a strategic shift: Alexa is being developed to proactively surface shopping opportunities rather than only respond to customer queries. That change could alter how and when users encounter purchase prompts during their shopping activities.
