Google has introduced a new experimental capability for its Gemini AI called "Call for Me," which can place calls to businesses on a user’s behalf. The move follows the emergence of other AI agents, such as Meta’s Muse and Meta Instinct, that are already able to make calls for users.
Availability and requirements
Initially, "Call for Me" will be available to Pixel 11 owners in the United States who subscribe to Gemini. The feature also requires use of the beta version of Google’s Phone app on Android, since Google describes the functionality as an experiment.
What the feature can do
Previous Google calling features were more limited; with this update, Gemini can share personal information that the user has approved as part of its calls, enabling a broader set of actions. Google lists example tasks the AI can handle, including:
- calling a store to ask whether a product is in stock,
- making a restaurant reservation,
- rescheduling an appointment,
- placing items on hold.
The AI can introduce itself to a business, navigate automated phone menus, remain on hold, and carry out the conversation with the person on the other end. Users can watch the call progress through a live transcript and can take over the call at any time.
Calls from the user’s number
Google says the service places calls using the user’s own phone number, meaning the calls are dialed directly from the user’s device.
Background and related features
The launch builds on years of Google experiments with AI-assisted calling. At a past Google I/O developer conference, Google showcased Google Assistant making a salon reservation and adding small speech disfluencies to make the interaction sound natural. Last year the company introduced "Ask for Me," a Gemini feature that let the AI call businesses to inquire about prices or services. Pixel owners have also had access to tools such as "Hold for Me" and "Talk to a Live Rep," which navigate phone trees and wait on hold until a human answers, and "Direct My Call," which displays numbers to use in IVR systems.
Limited rollout by design
Google says it is starting the experiment on a small scale because "real-world conversations are nuanced," and the company needs time to refine the feature before a broader rollout.
Summary
"Call for Me" extends Gemini’s ability to interact with businesses by placing calls from the user’s own number, sharing approved personal details, and providing live transcripts and user takeover. The capability is being piloted with a narrow set of Pixel 11 users in the U.S. who subscribe to Gemini and use the Google Phone beta.
