On Tuesday, Google announced five new updates for Android phones that aim to make devices more accessible, personalized and useful. The announced features target motion sickness reduction, navigation assistance for blind and low‑vision users, remembering where users place important items, and new personalization and sharing tools within Google Messages.
Motion Assist: reduces motion‑sickness caused by using phones in moving vehicles
The headline feature is Motion Assist, designed to help people who experience motion sickness when using their phones in a moving vehicle. The feature overlays a bubble on the screen that moves in response to the vehicle’s motion, intended to reduce the mismatch between what users see on their displays and what their bodies feel.
Google’s approach mirrors a concept Apple introduced in 2024 under the name Vehicle Motion Cues, which uses animated dots along the display edges. Motion Assist can be set to turn on automatically, added to Quick Settings, and customized for bubble shape, color and transparency. Google says the feature is available to devices running Android 17.
Guided Vision: camera and voice guidance for blind and low‑vision users
Guided Vision pairs the phone camera with Google’s Gemini model to assist tasks such as reading small print on packaging, viewing menus in dim lighting, or identifying household objects. When the camera is not properly positioned, the feature offers voice guidance to tell users to move the phone, pan the scene, or center an object. Guided Vision will ship to phones running Android 9 and newer in countries where Gemini is offered.
Remembered items in Find Hub: Gemini as a memory aid
Google is also adding a remembered items section to Find Hub that lets users tell Gemini where they stored something. For example, a user could tell Gemini that their passport is in a bedroom drawer and save that information to Find Hub; a photo can be attached to make later identification easier.
Google Keep integration and more personalization in Google Messages
Google Messages will gain Google Keep integration, enabling users to share and edit grocery lists, vacation notes and other content directly within conversations. Messages will also receive expanded chat personalization options: users can customize individual chats with backgrounds, photos and colors, and text bubbles will automatically match the chosen appearance. Apple introduced a similar custom background feature for Messages last year.
Why it matters
Some of the announced features bring Google closer to functionality already available from competitors, while others leverage Gemini to add AI‑driven conveniences. Availability will vary by device, Android version and country based on where Gemini is supported and which Android builds are in use.
