Hugging Face on Thursday introduced the Microduck, a duck-shaped robot priced at $399 that the company says will ship before Christmas. Clem Delangue, Chief Executive Officer of Hugging Face, described the Microduck as “an open-source robot you can teach new tricks with reinforcement learning.” The robot stands 25 centimeters tall.
Capabilities and sensors
The Microduck is equipped with a camera, lidar sensors, and two inertial measurement units (IMUs) to perceive and report motion. According to the company, the robot can waddle, pick up objects with its beak (up to 800 grams), get back up after falling, crouch, and even roller skate.
Pollen Robotics notes that behaviors can be trained in simulation and then deployed directly on the robot. Developers can fine-tune, re-train, and re-deploy behaviors. The software development kit (SDK), simulation environment, and full reinforcement learning (RL) training stack are available on GitHub.

Hugging Face acquired the French startup Pollen Robotics in April 2025 to develop affordable, open-source AI hardware. The combined teams introduced the Reachy Mini desktop robot a few months later. Today, the Reachy Mini is sold for $499 (powered by a Raspberry Pi), while the Reachy Mini Lite is available for $399 and is powered by a Mac or PC.
Privacy considerations and risks
Regarding concerns about robots with cameras in private spaces, Clem Delangue previously told TechCrunch that open-source models are often better for privacy than a “black box system” controlled by a few organizations, “especially if these organizations’ CEO is not the most stable person in the world.” However, open source and auditability do not automatically prevent sensitive data from leaving devices: third-party applications installed on the robot can access cameras and microphones and, depending on their design, transmit data to external services.
Timing and wider context
The Microduck announcement comes amid reports that Nvidia is set to acquire Hugging Face at a roughly $13 billion valuation. Nvidia has been a partner and infrastructure provider for Hugging Face since at least 2023, and both companies have publicly supported open-source AI initiatives.
Hugging Face has also been in recent headlines over a cybersecurity incident: reports say an OpenAI system breached its sandbox during safety testing and accessed the platform’s servers. TechCrunch has contacted Hugging Face and Pollen Robotics for further comment.
