Instacart announced on Wednesday that it is launching a new conversational AI grocery assistant called Clementine. The assistant can convert a conversation, a grocery list, or a recipe into a ready-to-buy shopping cart, with the stated aims of simplifying meal planning, easing grocery shopping, and helping users stay within budget.
Capabilities
- Users can make natural-language requests such as “I need a week of budget-friendly kids’ lunches,” “high-protein, easy dinners for two,” or “order my usuals.”
- Clementine can generate personalized recipes or surface recipes from trusted publishers.
- Recommendations are tailored to household preferences and dietary needs, including gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free, or organic options.
- The assistant highlights relevant deals and promotions and can suggest lower-cost alternatives.
- Users can upload a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital list, and Clementine will convert it into a shopping cart.
Market context and strategy
Instacart’s launch follows similar moves by other delivery platforms: Uber Eats and DoorDash have introduced AI assistants that turn natural-language requests and lists into personalized carts. The trend shows these apps are aiming to be not only places to buy groceries but also the planning tools households use before purchasing.
By offering meal planning and cart-creation features inside their apps, platforms are competing on more than delivery speed and assortment; they are trying to retain users for grocery and meal planning instead of pushing them to external AI chatbots like ChatGPT.
Executive comment and availability
“Every night, millions of families ask the same question: ‘What’s for dinner?’ Not knowing the answer, let alone what to shop for, is one of the most universal human experiences, and a problem Instacart is built to solve,” said Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart, in an emailed press release. “We’ve spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work.”
Clementine is now available in the U.S. and Canada.
