At an event in San Francisco during the city’s Tech Week, Microsoft provided specifications and pricing for new Surface devices built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip, designed to run AI models locally on-device and to support AI agents.
Surface Laptop Ultra: two base models and expandable configurations
The Surface Laptop Ultra is offered in two base models: one starting at $2,600 and a higher-power variant starting at $3,700. Configurations with additional memory and storage raise the price up to $5,900. Microsoft noted that the highest-end configuration is already out of stock.
Surface RTX Spark Dev Box: a developer workstation
Microsoft also introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a workstation powered by the RTX Spark chip, with a starting price of $6,000. The device ships with developer tools such as Visual Studio Code (VS Code), GitHub Copilot CLI, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and PowerShell 7.
Purpose: on-device AI and agent execution
Microsoft says both devices are engineered to run AI models locally for free, relying on CPU, GPU, unified memory and hardware adjustments like improved cooling to handle those workloads.
Windows 11: Execution Containers for sandboxing agents
The devices run an updated version of Windows 11 that includes a feature called “Execution Containers,” which Microsoft says simplifies sandboxing AI agents. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated at the event that the feature will be made available to all Windows 11 users.
Nadella explained: “One of the things we realized in the last 3–4 years is that just having a model doesn’t do much for anything. You really do need to orchestrate, and you need to have memory outside of the model. You need to have this harnessed layer that is able to take multiple models plus context, plus memory, and the action space.” He added that Microsoft is enabling that capability “not just for our apps but apps for anyone’s agent. That’s what the Windows platform is all about going forward.”
Target audience and MacBook Pro trade-in offer
The hardware is clearly aimed at developers: Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 off for customers who trade in a MacBook Pro, reflecting the Mac’s popularity among developers and AI agent users, especially in Silicon Valley.
Multiple use cases beyond development
Microsoft also says the high-performance graphics make these Surface devices suitable for content creation, video processing and gaming.
Other manufacturers: Dell’s RTX Spark PC
Microsoft was not the only vendor to reveal RTX Spark Windows PCs on Wednesday. Dell disclosed specs for the previously announced Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition, which is available for preorder at Best Buy with an October delivery window, priced at $3,800.
Conclusion
Microsoft’s new Surface devices and the Windows 11 Execution Containers feature signal a push toward enabling local AI workloads and agent orchestration for developers and creators. The pricing, trade-in incentives and parallel announcements from companies like Dell indicate broader industry movement around RTX Spark-based Windows PCs.
