Spotify announced that starting in mid-September it will add an “AI Persona” badge to artist profiles that represent identities generated by artificial intelligence rather than real people. The badge will signal that the profile’s public identity is AI-created.
What will change and when
- The “AI Persona” label will appear on artist pages: in the profile banner, the About section, in Search results, and on track rows within playlists.
- Labels are expected to begin appearing in mid-September.
- Artists will be able to self-disclose as AI Personas via Spotify for Artists beginning August 11, 2026; Spotify says it will not rely solely on self-disclosure.
Recommendations and algorithms
By default, Spotify will exclude artists labeled as AI Personas from its editorial and algorithmic recommendation systems, and their music will not be added to users’ personalized recommendations — unless a user has chosen to follow that AI Persona. Spotify notes that following an artist is the explicit signal that a listener wants more music from that person or entity.
Profile review, appeals and user reports
Spotify will also review artist profiles where names and imagery appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities. The company will start reviews with profiles that meet predefined audience thresholds so that more-listened-to artists are checked first. Artists can appeal if they believe a label was applied incorrectly.
In the coming months Spotify will roll out a tool allowing users to report artist profiles that appear to be AI Personas but have not yet been labeled.
Why Spotify is doing this
The move expands Spotify’s broader AI policies. The company first published rules on handling AI-generated music in September 2025; those policies use industry-standard techniques to identify and label AI music and ban unauthorized AI voice clones and deepfakes from the platform.
Spotify is attempting to balance AI-driven innovations — such as its own AI-powered Prompted Playlists, AI DJ and chat features, and upcoming AI remixes — with efforts to prevent a flood of low-quality, mass-produced AI content (so-called “AI slop”) that could degrade user experience and prompt subscription cancellations.
What the label means for the music itself
Spotify clarified that the “AI Persona” badge applies to the artist’s public profile identity, not to how the music was created. Information about the production of a track will continue to be available through other Spotify features such as AI Credits and SongDNA.
Relationship to licensed remixes and covers
The labels will also help differentiate AI Personas from licensed AI-generated remixes and covers that Spotify’s recent licensing deals with labels such as Universal Music Group (UMG) and Merlin will permit. Those deals will allow fan-made remixes and covers while routing revenue back to participating artists.
Summary
From mid-September Spotify will mark profiles that appear to be AI-generated with an “AI Persona” badge and by default will keep those profiles out of its editorial and algorithmic recommendations. Artists may self-disclose from August 11, 2026, and the platform will perform profile reviews, accept appeals and add a user reporting tool to catch unlabeled AI Personas.
