Uber rolls out ChatGPT Work to all 30,000 employees

Uber and OpenAI expanded their partnership so that ChatGPT Work will be available to Uber’s entire global workforce of about 30,000 employees.

Uber rolls out ChatGPT Work to all 30,000 employees

Uber and OpenAI said on Thursday that their partnership is expanding: ChatGPT Work will now be available to Uber’s whole global workforce, roughly 30,000 employees, the company told TechCrunch.

Background on ChatGPT Work and the pilot

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work in July as an enterprise-focused AI tool that teams can deploy for a variety of workflows. Earlier this year Uber ran a pilot with 1,000 employees and has since scaled that deployment company-wide.

According to Sumanth Sukumar, Uber’s Vice President of Engineering, the pilot included staff from multiple functions — including finance, operations, and product. About 80% of the early adopters were non-engineers. Employees used the tool for tasks such as analyzing complex operational data to identify trends and develop recommendations, localizing training materials for different markets and languages, and creating personalized interactive dashboards to manage daily work.

How Uber plans to use the tool

Although Uber is rolling out ChatGPT Work broadly, it has not prescribed rigid use cases. Sukumar said the company’s approach is to make powerful AI tools available across the organization while allowing teams room to experiment. Earlier this year Uber also paired 30 AI engineers with teams across the company for two-week engagements to automate key parts of their jobs; those "AI pods" highlighted opportunities that arise when technical expertise is combined with deep knowledge of specific roles.

Costs and evaluation

Uber did not disclose how much it is spending on the rollout. Instead, Sukumar said the company will monitor how employees use the tool, the types of workflows that emerge, and how those workflows improve effectiveness; the findings will guide future AI deployment across the business. Uber said OpenAI worked closely with the company on integrating the chatbot.

OpenAI’s enterprise push

The announcement comes as OpenAI rapidly scales its enterprise business amid competition, notably from Anthropic. Once primarily known as a consumer-facing brand, OpenAI has quickly built a strong following among business customers while some other AI companies have struggled to keep pace.

Who and when

The expansion covers Uber’s approximately 30,000 global employees. Uber did not publish a detailed rollout schedule; the company says it will shape internal policies and deployment based on observed usage and measured outcomes.
